Dr. Smith is board certified by both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board Otolaryngology as a facial plastic surgeon and an ear, nose and throat specialist (ENT). It was while he was residing in the Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the McCullough Plastic Surgery Clinic that he discovered the beginnings of what would become the SMITH-Technique migraine treatment.
His preceptor, one of the nation’s foremost facial plastic surgery pioneers, commented that every so often a rhinoplasty patient who also required a septoplasty procedure would mention that after the surgery they no longer suffered from migraines or headaches. This launched Dr. Smith’s curiosity into the scientific correlation between migraine headaches and the nose.
What he discovered was that deviated septums, which is when the bone and cartilage between the nasal passages become bent or crooked due to slight or severe trauma, were not the cause of migraines, but the cause of migraine-like symptoms.
